A layover is usually seen as time to endure. It doesn't have to be. With a bit of planning, long layovers turn into an extra city on your trip — sometimes with free hotels, guided tours, and streamlined visas thrown in by the airline itself.

The 6-hour rule

As a rule of thumb, you need at least six hours between touchdown and next departure to leave the airport safely. That covers immigration, luggage or storage, transit to the city, 90 minutes of exploring, and getting back through security. Under four hours, stay in the terminal.
